Dr. Joseph G. Surber of Southeast Regional Research Group Earns Physician Investigator Certification

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

(Columbus, Georgia) August 21, 2008 — Dr. Joseph G. Surber of Southeast Regional Research Group has earned Physician Investigator certification (CPI) through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) and the Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators (APPI).

Dr. Surber is one of only a few dozen physicians in the Southeast and one of only several hundred physicians worldwide who are designated as CPI.

“Not only is it an honor to join the physicians who are already CPI certified,” Dr. Surber said, “it is a tremendous opportunity for our medical communities in Columbus and Savannah areas to ramp up our efforts to educate our patients about the importance of clinical research to the future of medicine.”

“Without a doubt, CPI certification positions Dr. Surber as a leader in the research industry on a local, state, national and global level,” said Dr. Jeffrey Kingsley, Chief Executive Officer of SERRG, Inc. “His status as a Certified Physician Investigator will help build research-centered partnerships, and has great potential to strengthen his already stellar bond with his physician peers and patients.”

“Dr. Surber’s CPI certification assures us of quality research and research related healthcare right here in our own backyard,” Dr. Kingsley continued. “Advances through medical research are happening every day and this information needs to be shared amongst all those we come in contact.”

As Chief Medical Officer of SERRG, Inc., Dr. Surber is board certified in Family Medicine and holds faculty positions with the Medical College of Georgia and Mercer University.

Dr. Surber has been conducting medical research since receiving his medical degree in 2001 from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine located in Lewisburg, W.Va.

Medical Research Offers No-Cost Healthcare Option for Patient Volunteers

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

(Columbus, Georgia) August 21, 2008 — According to a new study just released from The Commonwealth Fund, in 2007 nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults went without needed healthcare because of cost.

Southeast Regional Research Group, a medical research facility in Columbus, offers treatment options that may not be available to patients otherwise. Patients who volunteer to participate in a medical research study often receive, at no cost, a medical assessment and lab tests relating to their condition as well as investigational medication which may help their condition, at the same time promoting the future of medicine.

In a Harris Interactive survey referenced by The Center for Information & Study on Clinical Research Participation, the major reasons cited by patients for participating in clinical trials include: “If it would benefit me or someone else” (58%); “If I knew all about the risks” (48%); “If the risk was minimal or if the reward outweighs the risk” (35.3%); and “For a cure” (35.3%).

Southeast Regional Research Group is currently enrolling patients 18 and older who are diagnosed with one of the following health conditions:

  • Atrial Fibrillation (Hypertension)
  • Chronic Renal Failure
  • Heart Disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Skin Infection

A FDA-regulated medical research facility, Southeast Regional Research Group conducts clinical research studies for many of the nation’s pharmaceutical research industry leaders. As such, hundreds of patient volunteers in The Valley and surrounding areas have turned to Southeast Regional Research Group to participate in medical research as it relates to their medical condition.

Doctors Say Contracting Strain of MRSA Staph Super bug Is Not Cause For Panic

Updated: June 10, 2008 09:44 AM EDT

(Columbus, Georgia) June 10, 2008

Bug bites. Splinters. Major and minor cuts. All these typical summertime injuries are an open invitation for skin infection. Unfortunately, with the threat of community-acquired MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) those skin infections can be a serious health problem.

“If skin starts getting hot, the skin is red, or begins to weep or rise as it fills with fluid just under the surface, those are signs a person needs to seek medical treatment,” said Dr. Jeff Kingsley, CEO of Southeast Regional Research.

A FDA-regulated research facility, Southeast Regional Research Group conducts clinical research studies for many of the nation’s pharmaceutical research industry leaders. The nation-wide concern over community-acquired MRSA has prompted many local physicians at hospitals and urgent care clinics to refer their patients to Southeast Regional Research Group to receive the latest medical treatment for complicated and uncomplicated skin infections.

“Through medical research conducted over the past year in Columbus we have found that 100 percent of our patients with MRSA infections carry the most recent and most concerning new mutation,” Dr. Kingsley said.

Working with Dr. Kingsley, Dr. Joseph G. Surber, CPI, has also seen the prevalence of MRSA in Columbus.

“The good news here is that every patient we treat is getting the latest, most effective medication and treatment to fight this potentially deadly infection,” Dr. Surber added. “On top of that, we’re helping the medical world attack this problem before it becomes an epidemic.”

If you are concerned your summer-time injury has gotten infected, call Southeast Regional Research Group at 888-SERRG-08 (888-737-7408). Located at 5210 Armour Road, Suite 400, our standard office hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., with our staff on call 24/7 to treat patients as their needs arise.

Qualified participants will receive study-related procedures and investigational medication at no cost. Participants in our clinical research studies must be 18 years or older.

Doctors Say Contracting Strain of MRSA Staph Super bug Is Not Cause For Panic

Updated: Nov 1, 2007 09:44 AM EDT

November 1, 2007

MRSA finally hit close to home last week, when an East Alabama woman died from the staph super bug.

The severe cases getting national attention are starting to scare many people in our area.

But doctors say even though MRSA is highly contagious, there is no need to panic.

“We have meds that are very effective against MRSA, the resistant form, and we continue to do research on new drugs that are effective against MRSA,” said Dr. Joseph Surber, of SERRG, Inc.

When you catch an infection early enough, some doctors may recommend a topical treatment like Staphaseptic Bactericide gel sold in most drug stores.

But for infections that have already taken root in the skin, you need more powerful oral medications.

“There are two or three antibiotics you can get, the problem is there are certain strains that are becoming resistant to the antibiotics available, and that’s because we’ve overused antibiotics,” said Terry Hurly, the owner of Dinglewood Pharmacy.

Patients with the most severe cases of MRSA come here, to the Southeast Regional Research Group on Armour Road in Columbus.

Dr. Surber and others test new antibiotics and IV therapies, trying to stay one step ahead of the drug resistant bug.

He says with all the new treatments, catching MRSA is by no means a death sentence.

“If it is a serious infection, you can die from it, but these are usually people who have medical problems, their immune system isn’t functioning, and a normal healthy person has a low risk of dying from a staph infection,” said Dr. Surber.

Dr. Surber says about 90% of the patients who come to him have the MRSA strain of staph.

More and more of them are not responding to traditional oral antibiotics.

But IV infusion treatments continue to produce a high success rate.

All of his patients beat the infection, and most cases clear up in about a week.

SERRG Featured on WTVM - 9 Columbus

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

SERRG, Inc was recently featured on WTVM – 9 Columbus to discuss a current clinical research trial for a new drug to treat staph infections. Dr. Joseph Surber and Dr. Jeff Kingsley are hosting this double-blind study to research the new antibiotic. Research in this area is critical because more and more staph infections are becoming resistant to current medical treatments.

Approximately 700 patients are needed for the study, and participation is free of charge. If the research drug is successful, it could potentially be on the market in a few years. Watch the video to find out more about the study.
